Vitamin E Supplement Helpful To Late Pregnant Mares

Author: EHorse Equipment Staff - 12/11/2001

Extension Horse Specialist

University of Tennessee

Do you take vitamins? As a society, we are very conscientious about
vitamins. The same is true about many horse owners who provide supplemental
vitamins to their horses.

Often with a balanced ration, such vitamin supplementation may not be
necessary, especially in pleasure horses.

But recent research has shown that supplemental vitamin E may be beneficial
when fed to mares in late pregnancy.

Why would this research be important to broodmare owners?

Foals are born without any natural immunity to diseases, and it is several
weeks before their immune system is functional. To survive, foals must
acquire passive immunity from their dam`s colostrum or first milk. For about
a month before foaling, mares concentrate immunoglobulins in their
colostrum.

Immunoglobulin is IgG, but IgA and IgM are also important. Colostrum also
provides the foal with other special nutritional needs.

Immunoglobulins are rather large molecules that normally are too big to be
absorbed by the foal`s intestinal tract. But nature makes it possible for
the foal`s intestinal tract to absorb immunoglobulins for a few hours after
birth.

Foals may become sick and die without adequate immunoglobulins. Several
factors are critical in this process: 1) adequate immunoglobulin levels in
the colostrum; 2) early and frequent nursing to obtain immunoglobulins and
3) the intestinal tract`s ability to absorb these large immunoglobulins.
Failure of passive transfer occurs if this process does not work properly.

Researchers at the University of Connecticut divided 12 pregnant mares into
two groups based on breed, age and expected foaling date.

The mixed grass hay/grain diet fed met the National Research Council`s
vitamin and mineral recommendations. Half the mares were supplemented to get
the required level of 36 International Units (IU) of vitamin E per pound of
feed daily while the other mares got 73 International Units (IU) of Vitamin
E or twice as much daily.

The good news from this research is the scrum and colostrum IgG levels were
greater in those mares that received the higher level of added vitamin E.

All foal`s scrum IgG and IgM levels were similar at birth. After nursing,
foals from the higher vitamin E supplemented mares had larger scrum and IgA
values reflective of their dams`s colostrum.

From these data, it appears that the supplementing mares with higher levels
of vitamin E the last months of pregnancy improves both their scrum and
colostrat immunoglobulin levels as well as their nursing foals` blood level;
thus, reducing possible failure of passive transfer.

Broodmare owners can enhance this process by supplementing mares so they get
about twice the vitamin E required in the last months of pregnancy which
would be about 73 IU per pound of feed. Green pasture forages, wheat germ
oil, corn and soybean oils are good vitamin E sources. Hays however lose
vitamin E content in harvesting, curing and storage. If one feeds a
commercial vitamin supplement, use one with a high vitamin E content.

Mares foaling before spring pasture is available should be supplemented with
vitamin E. It seems advisable to continue supplementation for at least a
month after foaling or until the mares are on good-quality spring pasture.

Mares known to have pool quality colostrum or foals that have had failure of
passive transfer also should be supplemented with vitamin E at twice the
required level

Bloglines New Languages
Today we launched a new internationalized site that allows people to join and navigate Bloglines in six new languages. We've noticed since the beginning that our members read blogs, collect feeds and track searches in many languages, and we get great feedback from Bloglines fans all over the world. We want Bloglines to be easy for everybody, and part of that is opening the service to the millions of internet users that speak languages other than English. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
We have also reached the milestone of 200 million articles indexed. It took us a year to reach 100 million, and less than 4 months for our blog and news feed content index to double. That's amazing in any language.

Bloglines Firefox Center
It's no surprise that Firefox has been a big hit among bloggers: the browser is free, small, fast, open-source, standards-compliant, supported by a large community, and nicely optimized for RSS discovery.
With the 1.0 release today, we think it is really going to take off, and that's why we're announcing the Bloglines Firefox Center today.
Over the past few months, we've watched users steadily switch away from Netscape and Internet Explorer to Firefox. Back in July, while Firefox was still in beta, it had grown to over 5% of our traffic. Today, Firefox represents 20% of requests to Bloglines.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Firefox is its ease of extensibility. We regularly hear from developers writing programs on top of the Bloglines Web Services and Notifier APIs, but the Firefox extensions are some of the best and should really help regular consumers use RSS. To learn more, visit our Firefox Center and grab a copy of the browser and all the latest extensions.

Updates
We have rolled out several updates to Bloglines. There are two new versions of the Bloglines Mozilla Extension, an English version and a Portuguese version, with the following new features:
"Blog this Link" and "Blog this Text" options in context menu, allowing easy posting to your Bloglines Clip Blog
Automatic updating enabled
Compatible with latest Firefox nightly builds (0.11 or 1.0RC1)
Updated icon and text In addition to the Mozilla extension, a new Firefox extension called LiveLines has been developed by Bloglines user Gomyoung Kim. The notifiers page has a list of all the Bloglines notifiers and browser extensions available.
There has been a lot of activity involving the Bloglines Web Services, and we have updated the list of programs that use them. Several additional aggregators have announced support for Bloglines. There's a new Bloglines IM notifier, several programs dedicated to Bloglines and podcasting, and a script to download your Bloglines feeds to your iPod.
Finally, we have updated the Bloglines Web Services Sync API. The getitems method now supports bulk fetching of articles from all the subscriptions within a folder.

Forum and Show Only Updated Feeds
Today we launched a web forum for our users to discuss Bloglines, and for developers to discuss the Bloglines Web Services. We also updated the list of 3rd party tools that use the Bloglines Web Services. If you have developed a library or application that uses the web services, please announce it in the forum.
In addition, we also launched a new feature, Show Only Updated Feeds. You can toggle this setting in the Feed Options page of your account. When active, only subscriptions that have unread articles will be displayed in your My Feeds page. It's a great way to simplify the My Feeds display.

Bloglines Web Services
Today we announced the Bloglines Web Services, a set of functions to access Bloglines data in other programs. The services are built on open standards, and make it easy to access Bloglines subscription and blog entry data.
We also announced that several leading desktop aggregators, including FeedDemon, NetNewsWire and BlogBot, will be supporting the new functions, which will allow their users to synchronize their desktop accounts with Bloglines.
We look forward to the many exciting applications that will be built, and we will continue to expand the functionality of the Bloglines Web Services.

Keep New and Related Feeds
We rolled out two new features this evening, Keep New and Related Feeds. We also rolled out several minor interface changes, designed to make Bloglines easier to use.
Keep NewWhen reading your feeds, at the bottom of each entry is a checkbox labeled Keep New. Check it and that entry is marked unread, and will stay that way until you uncheck the box. This is useful for entries that you decide you don't have time to read right now, but that you don't want to save in your Clippings folder. You can also use the mark all new link that appears at the top of each feed in the right pane when reading subscriptions to reset all the currently displayed items to unread.
Related FeedsThroughout the Bloglines site, there is now a related feeds link for each feed. We look at all the Bloglines subscribers for a given feed, and calculate what other feeds may be related to that feed. This is another method for finding interesting feeds. It complements the Bloglines Recommendations which differ in that those are personalized for each user.
Log In ChangeFinally, on a technical note, we changed how user authentication is done on the site. All this means to you, our users, is that you may have had to to log in again after the site upgrade, even if you were logged into the site before.

Horses.

We went horse-riding today in the snow.
When riding a horse, it soon becomes clear that the horse is another being from yourself entirely. Riding a horse is not like driving a car. You hold the reins, and if the horse is trained well, you generally get your way with a gentle tug or two. Unlike a car the horse has a mind of its own. She may be tired, or cold, or bored, or feeling lazy, or wishing she could have some grain, or desiring to get that itchy saddle off and have a good roll. She may become irked with that anonymous, cooing monkey on her back and deliberately take it under every low-hanging, snow-covered branch or drag it past the trees on the side of the trail. She may simply start bucking, perhaps simply to frighten it, or in a serious attempt to get it off. She may deliberately disobey instructions, following too close to the next horse, or refusing to stop when everyone else has. She may break out into a canter when she is supposed to trot, or trot when she is supposed to walk. When riding, it soon becomes clear that the horse may indeed do anything she wishes.
A good rider knows that he must not back down when the horse misbehaves. He must not show fear. He must be gentle, he must be patient, but he must be firm. This is the battle of wills between horse and rider: for any greater purpose to be acheived, the rider must be obeyed and the horse must submit.
Horses have done well from this bargain. Over the millenia, their kind has thrived, spreading their horse-sons and horse-daughters across the world, becoming for an age pillars of human civilization. For this, they have received our love and affection: daily groomings, clean stables, mountains of hay, and grain and sugar cubes and other horsey delicacies. Our histories and our language are bound up in these workhorses and the horsepower they provide, no matter how many times we had to rein them in or spur them on.
Yet they still resist. After our eventful ride, I was quite ready to get back down on solid ground and go to dinner. As I was walking past the training ring, I saw Brianna, one of the camp kids, riding a young brown horse recently broken. Brianna has grown up with these horses all her life, and she is one of the most experienced trainers the camp has. The horses gait broke from trot to canter to trot, in and out, occasionally bucking, as she rode it around the edge of the fence. Nothing could faze Brianna. With a deft hand at the reins, a sure seating on the saddle and a gentle voice in the horse’s ears, she rode through everything, certain that the horse would conform itself eventually. If not today, then tomorrow, or next month. She would persist, no matter how many branches it busted across her on the trail.
I wonder if this is not something like when we Christians say that Christ lives in our hearts. We have allowed him to saddle us and ride, but then we persist in our strong-willed ways. We don’t want to go that way; there’s an interesting smell over here. Or we get bored, or tired, and we sulk. Or we get mad at our fellow horses and try to kick them. Or we get mad at our rider, and drag him past every tree branch and thornbush, all the way to the hill at Calvary.
Yet always at the end of every ride (and this is the part that we like), there is the warm stable with hay and grain and a brush, and his hand on our muzzle and his voice in our ear, telling us that we are a good horse, and we’ll do better next time, and someday we will be a great horse and obedient, and able to do great things someday with our rider.
Sometimes I wonder if this is not how it is.
